4. REFLECTION

Experience

Being the first module I encountered in my first semester, typography has set a high standard for me among all the modules in this course. Each week, I progressively learned more about type through the lectures and feedback from Mr. Vinod. By following the clear instructions given, I am required to consistently produce work through the exercises and tasks given, this structured rhythm of learning not only helped me avoid procrastination but even motivated me to perform better in my other modules too. I truly appreciate Mr. Vinod for taking the time to go through all my work and for consistently providing detailed feedback, his guidance pushed me to do my very best and most importantly, taught me to pay close attention to details, which is a crucial aspect of this module.

Observations

After 14 weeks in this module, I am able to reflect on my previous work and see how much I have improved. Being able to recognize areas where I could have done better is a positive sign, as it shows my growth and deeper understanding developed throughout the semester. In addition, looking through my classmates work made me reflect on my own progress and identify areas where I can improve. I believe that observing references and developing a deeper understanding of typographic principles will allow me to achieve better design outcomes.

Findings

At the start of the semester, I did not understand how important type is in design and even thought that learning about letters and fonts was boring. However, after 14 weeks of studying typography, I realized that type can actually be fun and interesting. Typography is one of the most basic forms of design, and designing using only letters can be very challenging, it pushed me to think outside the box and visualize my ideas in simple yet engaging ways. The most important aspect of this course is attention to detail, as a page of text can look very different even with the smallest changes, I especially realized this while designing my own font, where minor adjustments could lead to very different outcomes.
