1. INSTRUCTIONS

This task is an extension to the selected idea sketch in Task 2, we are required to create an final artwork with a chosen medium that fulfills all the design principles of the chosen artwork selected in Task 1.

2. WORK PROCESS

2.1 Research

"The Umbrellas" by Pierre-Auguste Renoir is a oil painting art piece, I want to create the same texture to my own work but in digital form. I decided to test out some brushes in GoPaint to see which one is the most suitable.

I will use the ticked brushes for my work as it is most similiar to the example artwork I chose.

2.2 Reference

Before starting to work on my final piece, I searched for some reference online to get a better picture of how I want my own piece to look like.

2.3 Sketch

First I roughly sketched out Rapunzel's figure in the same pose as my reference, then drew her face as well.

Then I painted the sky with a sunset gradient and colored the lanterns with different shades.

I went on to complete the paint work for the buildings and floor.

Next, I colored the background characters.

I multiplied the same drawing of the decorations to ease the process.

Lastly, I hid the sketch's layer and did some minor adjustments. I also added a layer of shadow over the whole canvas but erased parts like the lanterns and Rapunzel to show a glowing effect.

2.5 Final Work

Figure 2.5.1 The Lanterns_Cher Pei Ying_Task 3

The name for this artwork is "The Lanterns", inspired by "The Umbrellas" which I chose as an reference in Task 2. In Renoir’s painting that I selected as a reference, the repeated shapes of umbrellas create unity and rhythm within a busy crowd scene while in this piece, the floating lanterns act as a repeated visual element, guiding viewer’s eye across the composition. Not only that, the bright and glowing lanterns contrast against the cool sunset sky, creating strong visual emphasis and color contrast. This contrast also highlights the main character because Rapunzel's bright blonde hair and soft purple dress stands out clearly against the background which has a more dull shade, making her the focal point of the artwork. Besides, this piece also explores balance within the environment. The placement of buildings, decorations and background characters helps distribute visual weight evenly across the scene, achieving asymmetrical balance. Other than the lanterns, repetition can also be seen in the background decorations, further enhancing unity throughout the composition. Lastly, the soft brush strokes and blended colors capture mood and light rather than fine details, creating a dreamy and celebratory feeling, similar to the lively yet gentle atmosphere in Renoir's "The Umbrellas".

3. FEEDBACK

Week 7:

It is nice, continue to work on it.

4. REFLECTION

This was a very challenging task to me as I have never tried to do oil painting digitally so I had to search for tutorials online to learn from beforehand, but most of the tutorials are not meant for beginners, therefore I had to go through a bunch of trial and error processes. I especially struggled a lot in painting the hair and skin, the details for the hair could be better. My favorite part was to paint the lanterns, I think they came out pretty good. I am glad I chose to do a Rapunzel themed artwork as I always really liked the movie, and working on this piece was very fun.
